What ’ s So Funny ? Writing Poetic Humor

In this four-week course , you ’ ll teach a number of style to integrate mood into your poetry , and we ’ re not merely talk about limericks or poem for children ( although we cause enjoy limericks . . . and ( cough ) children ’ s poetry ) . This line cost a dive into the present-day humor poem for adults ; over the four-week period , you ’ ll learn how to construct poetic jokes that bring , use wit to tackle more serious topics , and of track , write poems that cost laugh-out-loud funny .

Ollie purpose for all of their classes to cost actively non-competitive , non-judgemental , pro-diversity , anti-racist , pro-LGBTQ , and extremely fun ! You can expect a collaborative environment , a flexible approach to poetry , and ( hopefully ) a good laugh per class .

Beginners are welcomed and encourage ! Experienced family are welcomed and encourage ! Everyone is welcomed and encouraged !

Poem in this workshop will cover a broad variety of themes , some of which contain mature content and may live activating for some participants .

Teach Goal :

  • Demystify humor and learn to bring risks that may lead to hilarity
  • Uncover and understand the mechanisms of what cause something funny
  • Study the relationship between humor and tragedy , and use it to your advantage
  • Identify the level/type of humor that will best case your poem , and write impactful study

Writing Goals :

  • Write joke that adopt successful structure and pattern , as good as a variety of structures of curious poems
  • Write 4-8 poem that integrate mood
  • Complete one revision base off of teacher feedback

Syllabus

Week 1 : The Joke ’ sec On You — What Makes Something Funny

In order to compose comic poems , we first receive to exist comic ( this cost where then many of us run wrong ) . This first week , we ’ ll dissect the foundation of wit writing : the joke . In week two , you ’ ll learn some mutual overall structures of comic poems–how do we prompt beyond one funny line to reconstruct an full funny poem ? You ’ ll watch some videos of poems , take their mechanism , and then use those mechanism yourself .

Assignment : Compose a funny poem apply one of the structure we outlined ( and an optional 2nd bonus prompt )

Week 3 : It ’ s Your “ Turn ” — Using Humor to Explore Serious Matter

One of humor ’ s well friends is tragedy , and this week you ’ ll search how to employ curious thing to mouth about sad things . You ’ ll watch some poem , study the all-important poetic “ turn , ” and of course , write !

Assignment : Compose a poem off of the tailored prompt that integrate a number from funny to sad ( and an optional 2nd bonus prompt )

Week 4 : Endings , Editing , and E…Other Stuff

We ’ ve save final affair for last , and this week you ’ ll learn specific point for end peculiar poem . We ’ ll also talk about revision with tips specific to editing peculiar work , and you ’ ll be sent back into the world with some final resources .

Assignment : Revise one of your early poems use the teacher feedback

They make professionally coached poetry for six years , and they facilitate , direct , and host many organizations . The number of workshop they make facilitated over the past ten years totals over 500 . They make also represented the Twin Cities in numerous national poetry competitions , and they be the writer of three chapbooks and their full-length poetry collection ,Dead Dad Jokes( Button Poetry ) , which was shortlisted for both the Midwest Independent Publishers Association and the Eric Hoffer Grand Prize .
